UNTYING YOUR "KNOTS"

Q: Can you explain how becoming a Pattern Aware Leader (PAL) can help me with the tension I experience when I meet with my boss? It feels like a knot in my stomach and it happens every time I get called into his office.

A: If you feel a “knot in your stomach” when you talk with your boss, try to get an observation of the situation. “The boss,” in most organizations, is an authority figure. The boss can listen to us, promote us, favor us, ignore us, blame us and sometimes fear us. We report to them, emulate them, like them, dislike them, judge them and sometimes take legal action against them. Part of everyone’s job is to learn the most effective behavior possible to respond to authority. Gaining a new awareness of your patterns will help you gain valuable insights into your own personal reactions to authority and will place you in a more powerful position to choose the most appropriate response in the future. Here is how to begin. Read more...

I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to accomplish, and how best to maximize this opportunity and have it be an authentic experience. I was conscious that we were about to begin budgeting for a new fiscal year, and considered this a unique opportunity to get everyone’s input and to arrive at some fundamental priorities, which would inform the budgeting process. I kept hearing Herb’s mantra from the Total Leadership Connections (TLC) program over and over--“Be IN-clusive, not EX-clusive”. Read more...
