ATTENTION: All Parents

We need to STOP and think about what our teenagers need for their development. We need to START them on the road to personal, professional and global leadership NOW!

We have partnered with the town of Axim, located in Ghana, Africa and plan to have several teens from that area along with young people from the international community join us for the Young Leaders in Action program, July 16-22, 2006.

As more companies become global and the planet moves more and more into a connected world the children with the advantage will be the ones with the broadest perspectives of diversity and unity.

Help your child be at the head of the leadership class at home, at school and in the world.

Hot off the Press

Co-founder and President of Creative Energy Options, Inc. (CEO), Sylvia Lafair, Ph.D. has recently been published in two national magazines.

Sylvia had her second article in Family Business Magazine in the Spring 2006 issue. "Leadership in a Crisis" focuses on the heroic work of Neill Corp during the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. Sylvia had an article in this publication in Winter of 2005 on "Mastering Conflict in a Family Business". Check out both articles at www.familybusinessmagazine.com.

Worthwhile Magazine, www.worthwhilemag.com, published Sylvia's article "Is Power More Trump or Gump?" It focuses on how we use our power, for the better of the organization VS for our own personal advancement. To read more of this and other great articles, pick up a copy of Worthwhile today at Barnes and Noble and other book stores. It's worthwhile to read Worthwhile!!!

Enjoy this interview Sylvia did with an amazing leader. It will be part of her book, "The Psychology of Success."

A Woman for All Seasons:
Frances Hesselbein

The woman sitting across from me had the aura of a pioneer. In my mind’s eye I saw her chopping wood, tending fires, hauling water from a nearby stream.

Yet, here she was in a tailored suit handing me a cup of green tea and answering my questions about the photographs on the wall of her tasteful Park Avenue office.

Without false humility or blinding ego she talked about being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House and of her encounters with many of the presidents who lived there. The medal, America’s highest civilian honor; was awarded in 1998 recognizing her leadership as Chief Executive Officer of the Girl Scouts from 1976 to 1990 and as Founding President and Chief Executive Officer of the Peter Drucker Foundation in 1990.

Talking with her was like having a special lunch with a favorite teacher. Her conversation was direct and deep. No evasion, no chest thumping and, what a relief, no platitudes.

Frances Hesselbein is a national treasure (although I’m sure her eyebrows would raise at such a thought). Her diminutive frame belies the power punch behind her genteel manner. We did not spend much time talking about awards and recognition. They were what appeared while she was busy doing her daily work.

We went right to the core of the subject “How do we develop quality leaders in an era so lacking in role models?”

In her no nonsense manner she hit the nail with one blunt swing of the hammer,

Creating Great Meetings (Scene Four)

In the previous three issues of Pep Talk™ we provided the skills to change boring meetings into GREAT MEETINGS! We hope you’ve used some of these tips and techniques.

It's time for our final scene of this well rehearsed production. In Scene Four you will learn how to be the "Realizer" and implement everything for successful meetings. Who doesn’t want to go into a meeting with a great vision and leave with feeling something really got accomplished?

To have a successful meeting you need to be able to implement the skills we’ve discussed previously, those of a Visionary, Explorer, Integrator and now Realizer.

    Here’s a brief review:
  • The Visionary works from respect and integrity and gets everyone involved in solving the problems of the day.
  • The Explorer checks assumptions and intentions and is open to outcomes even if it is different from what the leader expected. The Explorer is able to solve conflicts that cause stagnation and poor morale.
  • The Integrator asks clarifying questions, questions without “yes” or “no” answers. Trust is developed by preventing sidebars and zingers and keeping everyone involved in the dialogue. A key here is timing and understanding the dynamics of the group.

In Scene Four, the Realizer encourages the right dialogue to build healthy relationships that ultimately lead to satisfied employees and a stronger bottom line.

So how can you become a Realizer?
  • Set some Ground Rules at the beginning of the meeting, what is acceptable behavior to move the group forward? Establish ground rules around agenda, time, breaks, cell phones, etc. This sets the mood for great communication and shows how you plan meet your objectives of the meeting.
  • Get everyone focused—take one minute to have everyone sit quietly and reflect on what they want to accomplish in the meeting.
  • Allow time to get current and see what’s on everyone’s mind. If there’s a crisis brewing in your organization, today may not be the day to plan your new marketing strategy!
  • Share the leadership, let others take on some of the facilitation; it's great practice for them and makes you respected by others.
  • If you’re spinning around on a subject with no closure then suggest after three go-rounds with no consensus, maybe it’s best to let it rest & revisit next time.
  • Acknowledgement goes a long way. Give credit and thanks for participation and sticking to the guidelines. Appreciation fosters creativity.
  • Have people make their commitments to complete an assignment in front of the group—it sticks better when we say it out loud and in the presence of others.
  • One Word Closing - allow everyone to reflect on the accomplishments of the group, in just one word!

So, you've learned how to turn those boring, going nowhere meetings into "WOW" meetings and unleashing the hidden talents in your team. It takes rehearsal upon rehearsal to perfect the art of a great production. We hope you practice the four scenes to orchestrate your own finely crafted theatre and that you receive a standing ovation!!!
